Overview

The Notebook is a movie full of love, and romance. The amount of love shared throughout this movie is unconditional. It is definitely a "Must See" if you have not already seen this movie.

Slide2

Production:

The Notebook is based off a novel written by Nicholas Sparks of the same name. The movie however was written by Jeremy Leven and Jan Sardi and directed by Nick Cassavetes. Major cast members include Ryan Gosling as Noah, Rachel McAdams, James Garner, and Gena Rowlings. Distributed by New Line Cinema. The movie begins off with an old woman in a nursing home and an old man there. He goes there daily and reads her stories. Later on in the movie, we find out that the old man is trying to make the woman remember their past together. They were madly in love, and he wants her to remember that.

Representation

The Notebook is a story representing never ending love. This couple spend their teenage years together even though Allie's parents does not approve of Noah for they feet that their daughter deserved something better than him. Instead they propose that she marry another man who Allie does not really like. Even against their wishes, Allie and Noah continued to see each other and they fell in love. This represents a love that they fought for. Even when the two got older, and went their separate ways for awhile, they still end up back together at each others side. They die together.

Also, the table that is shown in the house of the movie was built by Ryan Gosling during his preparation for the role of Noah.

Distribution

I personally think that the Notebook appeals to all audiences, not just a specific age group. The story is told in past tense from an older man (which might appeal to the older people), but he then begins to go back in his life to when he was a teenager (appealing to the younger adults).

It is known that The notebook is Favorited among many different people, espcially teens however. 2005 Teen Choice Awards, The Notebook took home 8 awards.

Reception

Of course those that enjoy watching love stories, and romanticism love watching The Notebook. It is considered a different kind of love story for many viewers because of the amount of years that pass by and the love still never dies. Even after Allie becomes married to someone else, Noah still is in love with her. He leaves her without never leaving her side.

Socialization

The 121 minute movie "The Notebook" came out in 2004, and it still one of the most talked about and viewed movies to date. As stated before The Notebook was distributed by New Line Cinema. The movie grossed 13.5 million dollars in 2,303 theaters and was ranked #4 at the box office. This all occurred the weekend of it's opening. It is a favorite among many. The Notebook comes on movie channels, and also ABCF.

Activity:

Chemistry between two people is not something that you can just act, in order for the audience and viewers to believe it is real you have to make it look real. It is almost impossible to get it perfect the first try. It took time for the actors to create the chemistry needed for The Notebook, and that required many rehearsals. The movie also has a little humor in it, so of course the cast had to keep all of that under control.

Also, in the scene in which Allie and Noah were in the boats with swans following them, took practice and a lot of training. Those birds were not naturally there and so they had to be trained months in advance to appear the way that they did in the movie.

Some of the actors, including Ryan Gosling prepared for their roles by moving to Charleston, which is where the movie was filmed. Also including Rachel McAdams who spent two months down south just to get a feel of what it was like down there.

http://www.sciway.net/movies/sc-movie-notebook.html

Ecology

The Notebook was taken place in South carolina at various locations. The house that Noah rebuilt is located Martins Point Plantation, and the lake scene was shot at Cypress Gardens.

King Street in Charleston served as the location in which

  • Noah and Allie watched the traffic light.
  • Where Allie and Noah went to watch a film
  • Where Noah and Allie walked and talked for 3 blocks.

The Old Navy Base are in North Charleston is where

  • Production offices for the film were located.
  • Served as a backdrop for multiple scenes.

Hey Whitney,

To start off I think you really did a nice job with the representation of the movie itself. Your slides were all simple and not too complex, where as it would have been difficult to get the message across. The layout and design of each slide was basic but yet different and went along with the theme of the movie. You included just enough information with each slide to keep the person viewing it engaged and interested. When it comes to constructive criticism I have nothing to say bad to say. All of your slides were good, the images went well, your information was reliable, and overall you did an awesome job. Also the touch to add citations under each picture was a good touch. So no complaints good job Whitney.

Hey Whitney! I think you did a great job with your CHAT presentation! I absolutely love the movie The Notebook! I have not seen it in quite a while but now want to watch it! I think you did a great job with the pictures in this and really making the overall theme of this movie stand out in each and every one of your slides. You did not give too much information in your slides which made it a lot easier to follow. Getting the main point across really makes things easier to understand. You gave a lot of information about what the movie is all about and how this movie really drags people in to watching it. One thing I would suggest is adding a citation page. A citation page makes it really easy to access where you got all of your information for all of your slides. However, you did give a citation under each slide which is also good. Overall, I think you did a great job on the entire presentation! Good job!!

Whitney—the first slide was actually the picture for Dear John not the notebook, so slight mistake there haha but moving along, I really liked the layout of your slides, they were easy to read and got to the main point. The pictures helped feel the emotion in the movie that the characters expressed. The title on the production of the actual book the writing was backwards so it might be hard for some people to read. I like the idea of using the clip art heart to bring color into the slide and everyone knows that red hearts mean love. The pictures were creative and went along with the title of the slide. The quote that was on the reception slide didn’t flow properly and I think there might have been an extra “s” added to love in the quote, but simple mistake. It was a very believe story line about the movie and I like how the border of the pictures matched the color of the title border. Overall I thought it was a very nice CHAT map of the movie The Notebook, it is a good movie!

Hey Whitney! I’d like to start off by saying that I absolutely love the movie The Notebook! So when I saw that you did your CHAT map presentation on it I was instantly interested. It was really cool to learn more about a movie that I have loved since it first came out in theaters. I definitely liked the layout, colors, and fonts that you used in your slides. I also thought your slides were very simplified and easy to read. I like how you added descriptions directly underneath your slides. I think this addition really enhances the credibility of your presentation. Your descriptions were all very well written and concise. I really liked your activity slide and how you incorporated the importance of chemistry in the Notebook into it. Chemistry is definitely an important component in the movie that the audience should be aware of. The only suggestion I have is to add a citation page. However, I did notice you did added citations under your slides which is also good. Overall, I think you did a great job with your CHAT map presentation!!

Hey Whitney, I think you did a really good job and I really liked looking through all your slides. I love the movie the Notebook so its kind of cool to see how it was made and other information about its production. I loved the way you incorporated your images and text. It was very easy to read and the images were placed perfectly to where they weren’t too overbearing or covering any text. Your slides were put together really and had a nice flow to them. The pictures you used, I feel were in the perfect spots and seemed to correlate with what you were saying and put more meaning into your words. However, I would suggest changing your cover photo because I believe it is from a different movie. Overall, I learned a lot from your slides, you did very good research and didn’t put too many words on your slides but in contrast made it quick and straight to the point. In addition I also liked how you had the additional comments under each slide. This made your slides more understandable and to cleared up any outstanding questions I had. I noticed you had in text citation which made it easy for me to find the information you used in your slides. One suggestion I would like to make is to have a source page at the end of your slides. This is useful to us readers because all the citation information is conveniently in one spot and we can easily relook up any information we would like to. Overall, I think you did a great job with your research and presentation and I learned a lot about this movie!

Hi Whitney,

first off I have to say that I am in love with this movie! I think that all your slides were very creative and you could tell that you put a lot of time and effort into its appearance. The production slide had a lot of great information but could of used more. It is such a good movie that I think it would of been very beneficial to include more about the story line in your title page slide. The wording you used sometimes got very confusing and you had many minor grammar errors. But for the most part you did get your point across. I thought it was a great idea to include the sources of where you got your images right next to the image! I have to say that my favorite slide was the socialization slide, you had great information on there and I think you did a great job with organizing all that information. That slide really stuck out to me because it really proves how great of a movie The Notebook is! I would suggest creating a citation page at the end of your power point but other than that I think that you did a great job and I can't wait to go watch the movie again.

Hey Whitney,

The movie notebook was an excelelnt choice for a project. The slides are very heart warming. This was good because the film is about love and romance. Youre ecology slide was good because you included where the movie was filmed. My favorite slide was the activity one. Its really cool to see how physically attached and emotionally attatched actors have to be. The only thing i would recommend is to have a works cited slide at the end.

Whitney,

First off I love how you chose The Notebook to do your CHAT map on! I love that movie! I really liked your slides because they included pictures from the actual movie and gave you an idea as to what the theme of the movie is. There was also an explanation after every slide and all in all the setup of your slides was done very well. My advice to you would be that some of the bullet points on your slides were a little too vague, and it was difficult for me to know what you were talking about by some of them. For example, the representation slide was almost a little too vague to understand what you were trying to get across. Also, I would suggest going back and adding more information as to how the information on each slide pertains to the actual seven concepts that are involved in the CHAT map. What I mean by this is that some of the slides gave just a summary of the movie and didn’t really go into detail on how they represented the seven CHAT aspects. Additionally, you may want to cite some of your sources so that the reader knows where you got your information from. You did a good job at stating who the audience pertains to and how it has won numerous awards. Overall, you did a great job and the presentation is very appealing!

Whitney,

To start, i thought your project was awesome. You did a great job with everything. I was able to follow everything and got a sense of what the note book is about mostly because i have never actually seen the movie. To be honest, i used yours to get a base of what to do for mine, so you did a really good job. As for house keeping, you did a really good job keeping everything simple on the slides. You did a great job of summeraizing everything at the end of the slides and making sure we got all of the information that was necessary. You kept the slides simple and left the details for the following comments. Also, you cited everything on each slide which is important. Overall i'd say you did an excellent job on your chat map. Good Job

Hey Whitney,

Great your choice for CHAT map. I love The Notebook and with Valentine's Day just around the corner it appeals to all those hopeless romantics. I really liked the pictures that you chose, each one matched with what you were saying in the specific slide. When reading your powerpoint, I got a little confused but your paragraphs went into such depth that it helped me understand your slides perfectly. To help with your presentation you should cite your work that way if a reader wants more information they have an easy way to find it. Also to help talk more about who will like the movie and maybe give some examples of similar movies. That way if a reader hasn't seen the film, they will be able to see if it appeals to them compared to other movies. Other than that, Good job! I loved reading and learning more about one of my favorite movies.

Hey Whitney, I knew this movie/ book would come up eventually. You did a great job presenting it, though! You caught my attention with a great opening slide. Switching up the placement of the words on the slide is always a plus and your pictures were relevant to their perspective slides. One piece of constructive criticism, however, is use more than one word bullet points. On a couple of slides, I have no idea what you are talking about because your bullet points are too vague. Make sure to clarify what you mean when you put bullet points on your slides. On a brighter note, I liked how you cited your pictures and information on the slides. The information underneath the slides helped also with my questions and clarification. One last bit of criticism would be to mix up the font or style of the slide. The white background with the black heading gets kind of boring towards the end. If you changed up the background, that would be an easy fix to this problem. Great presentation though!

Hi Whitney, this is going to sound extremely cheesy but this movie is one of my all time favorite love stories to date if not my favorite, so I am glad that someone did a CHAT map on it. I absolutely love Ryan Gosling to the point of marriage. On a more serious note, I think you did a pretty good job on your chat map and I liked how you really captured the over all message with this movie, which is love. On every single one of your slides love was written all over it. I think your power point could use a little more spicing up but I liked the images you picked from the movie a lot. One more suggestion I think it would be interesting if you added more to about the chemistry they had to create and how that also leaded them to dating in actual reality. Focusing on your socialization slide I thought your paragraph was very specific and gave a lot of detail but I was a little confused with your bullet points on the actual slide. Over all I think you have a very solid CHAT map and I’ll defiantly be watching this movie this weekend!

Hey girl!

I thought that your presentation was great. I’m admittedly a huge fan of chick flicks, yet I hate The Notebook with a passion. Your slides were really appealing and cleanly formatted. Your color scheme was entertaining and pleasing to the eye. The format didn’t become an eyesore or boring because you found a way to put the focus on the text and pictures instead of the background and colors. Information presented was great and clear cut. I do recommend maybe adding more information into the slides as opposed to side notes below the sides. This way all of the reading is left for after each slide. The socialization slide is well put together and is easy to understand once looking at it. Over all, you did a great job in your presentation and topical choice. Keep up the great work!!

Sincerely Pat

Hey Whitney,

I enjoyed reading through your hubpage because it’s a movie that I’ve seen before and really liked. I acctually just watched it for the first time a few months ago. You did a great job of organizing your slides and all the information. It was really helpful. I was also able to understand the audience of the movie too. Even from personal experience I know that everyone, all ages, love this movie. Mostly women though with the exception of a few men. You clearly show the reasons why in the Representation slide because the movie is focused on romanticism and the idea of love. It’s something that everyone can relate to and that everyone wants to understand. Under the Socialization slide you can see how well recieved it was by the public because of how much money it made (13.6 million). Also it’s showed on TV all the time which means that people are still wanting to watch it even after almost ten years of it being out. It’s a classic movie and you did a great job of reviewing it.

Sincerely,

Jenn

Hi Whitney! I think that you did well. I like how you included a citation under the slide so the reader can know where your information came from. I know you elaborated up under the production slide but I think you should have added more information on the slide. I think that you should have included the author on the slide and the main characters. I like the colors you choose to do your slide so the reader would be able to read it. I also like the pictures you put on this slide. It makes it look like it is going to be a good movie. I think that overall you did a good job.

heatherhanney 3 months ago

Whitney,

Hey im sorry to say that I really dislike this movie, but your chat map is very nice. I love the colors you choose they all work really nice together. You did a very nice job with all the graphics and I love the first slides background, also I think all your pictures are very relevant to your chat map and work really well. My topic to talk about is social activity. The first part of social activity is distribution. I would advise you to talk about what company produced it and how it was shown to the public example was it in theater or did it go straight to DVD. You could also include some numbers like the profit the movie made. Another part of social activity has to do with the social effects of the movie. I think your chat map would be even better if you included information on how this movie changed the love story genre forever. You properly cited everything and that’s a very good thing, but if you wanted to take it one step further you could make a separate slide. I like the setup you used by putting comments in between the slides.

Hey Whitney,

Good choice for your CHAT map, The Notebook is such a widely known movie that it was a good pick for this project. For the audience section of your presentation, I like how you say that this movie can be for anyone including older people, younger people, and people who like to watch love stories. You do also say that it is one of the most talked about movies still. What might help that is either linking your viewers to a blog that is still currently talking about the movie along with maybe throwing in a quote or two from people that have seen the movie. Those two options could definitely enhance your CHAT map presentation! Just a few ideas for the future! But I liked your presentation, it was good!

Hey Whitney!

Nice choice on "The Notebook". My sister in-law LOVES this movie. Anyways, great job on organizing your slides. The pictures are excellent! Shows the base of your points really well. Your information was definitely well thought of and well represented! You gave the perfect amount of information that wouldn't lose our attention and got everything that needed to be said...well said. I have yet to FULLY watch "The Notebook" which I hear as a girl is a terrible crime, but after seeing this presentation i just might have to fully see it now that I have a better understanding of the movie! Thank you for that! Great job!

**Housekeeping**

- Presentation Notes

- Use of Citation

I like your approach to description and citations, in providing a paragraph and then following it with a URL to your sources of information. You have a good variety of sources, but it would be good to go a little deeper into finding interviews with the actors and producers rather than rely on second-hand accounts like Wikipedia.

**Production**

- Describing how it's produced

- Acknowledgement of creators

- Describing the research done by the authors

The details you give in Activity and Ecology give a very good idea of the challenges faced both in getting the actors to develop that "chemistry" and in trying to set up a good place to shoot hte film. In Ecology, you could build on this further by describing why the South Carolina location was so important to the film.

I like the background information you give in the Production section - it helps center us, telling us what *The Notebook* is about and who stars in it. However, I think this information would be more effective if you moved it up into the Introduction - this way, you'd have more room in the Production section to continue discussing how the film was adapted from the book, and maybe even talk about how the producers chose Sparks's novel to base their movie off of.

**Genre Conventions**

- Identifying the genre

- Describing the genre conventions

- Showing how these conventions are used.

In Represention, Reception, and your Introduction, we get a good feeling of the kind of romantic movie *The Notebook* is. To build on this, you'd want to talk more about what's expected of romantic movies. In particular, I'd like to know more about why the large passage of time you've described plays such a crucial role in the movie. By talking about the interplay between the old lovers in the nursing home and their youth spent together and how this format differs from other romantic movies, you'll be able to expand upon your description of why this movie appeals to viewers of all ages.

**Social Activity**

- Describing social and physical distribution

- Discussing cultural reception

Given the unique nature of the movie, your section on Reception would be a good place to talk about how this movie may have changed our cultural expectations of love. In Socialization, you mention that the movie often airs on television - why is this? What is it about the movie that convinces TV stations to use this movie to attract audiences?

**Audience**

- Identifying the intended audience

- Discussing how genre coventions are used to attract that audience

- Indicating audience reception.

I like your use of specific numbers in Distribution and Socialization - the commercial success of the film is a very good indicator of the effect it's had on viewers and critics. Go build on this, you'll need to talk about why *The Notebook* is such a favorite. How old are the typical audiences for the movie? Do we know for sure that it appeals to viewers of all age groups? The huge success at the 2005 Teen Choice Awards is a good way to segue into more about why it worked so well among teens that year.

Hi Whitney,

I loved your presentation! Although I am not one who likes love stories in general, and I have never seen this movie, you gave me a better appreciation for what it is really about. I never knew that it started out as a novel which was an interesting fact for me. Also the part where you talk about how it starts and ends in a nursing home was also interesting because everytime I see a preview for it when it comes on TV I just think it is just one of those typical love stories. But it is not, you depicted it as one that is non-conventional and that is what makes people want to watch it. You did a good job with your production page as well by adding in the author of the book as well as the writers of the movie, along with cast members who played in the movie. Overall I like your presentation and what it represents, you did a really good job. Each slide has this feel for love and romance an dthat is truely what the movie is about. It does not just talk about their story it paints a picture, and gives you a visual with the snapshots you have from the movie.

Ruth Otoo 3 months ago

i want to start off by saying that the slide is looking good. The choice of movie is good because everyone at least have watched snow white. The pictures fit well with the movie and what you are trying to tell your audience. It was a good choice of movie. The picture is also really nice and it makes the background looks nice to watch. Every slide has a good amount of information on it which makes it more interesting to read and also easier to understand and interpret what is being said to the audience. AS far as each slide is concern I want to say that each one looks we done. They are well organized. It makes the presentation nice to look at and also it makes you want to read the things that are on each slide. The first couple of slides do not look like they are chat map related but it helps us better understand the overall presentation and also the message that you are trying to give to your audience. As far as thing that you could strengthen would be if you can add some more pictures to the slides. So it will not be like we are looking at a completely different slide. The overall presentation is looking good as well as the citation.

jmmahe2 3 months ago

First of all, Ryan Gosling is a God. And I thought that those two are pretty cute together in the pictures. I've never seen The Notebook personally because I refused to watch it with my ex, but I've heard many great things about it. The way you described some of the scenes and how it was done was really interesting like the swans. Also, I like how you talk about the actors' training for conventions. It is pretty hard to fake being in love. The settings of the movie and production company was displayed along with other general details. I think you really brought it home with this slide. You had enough information and it was all relevant and necessary. Good organization and use of slides. Next time, make a separate slide for Gosling because he deserves it.
